Fascinating discussion. I think that the INEOS design is out on a limb. The skeg/bustle is much deeper than the others in the aft part, even though it stops well short of the rudder. It also seems to end very thin, like a blade whereas the others end in a squared off section at the transom. I wonder how this will affect drag in a displacement mode. Part of the purpose of the bustle is to provide some buoyancy in displacement mode so that the wetted surface of the flat sections either side is reduced. Since The bustle ends before the rudder it has to be sharp, since otherwise there would be a lot of suction =drag at that point. The others carry the bustle all the way to the stern, so it is ok to have some volume there giving some buoyancy. There is still a bit of drag at very low speeds, but as soon as the hull starts to gain some speed, the water breaks away at the end of the skeg and reduces drag just like the transom on a planing power boat. Despite the input of the Mercedes designers, I think it is strange that Britannia is so bulky. That doesn’t look aerodynamically efficient. Videos seem to show that Britannia is less stable than the others. I hope I am wrong, but I fear that Britannia will not be competitive with the others.

It's really a great family cruising yacht for a reasonable price. I'm sure if ppl offered another million $'s they'd make the interior more 5 star hotelish, but for a small family this one is perfect with all the comforts of home and enough space for privacy and quiet times. I like it, very practical. 😀😀

Not such a beauty - but drips quality, security, surprising performance and a potential way beyond my ken, I suspect. Needs hull windows inset to protect them from fenders, steps down to saloon need 30’ bevelled steps, all shower rooms and wet lockers need forced extractors to suck out dampness. Mast could use a Lightning conductor strip Linked across to nearest/all standing rigging ! Huge congrats to Mr Rassy and the team of absolute geniuses who lovingly crafted such a masterpiece. Wow ! Just WOW.

Are INEOS are trying to minimise the size of flaps on their main hydrofoils and rudder, by making the whole rudder more mobile (thus the structure above the deck)? This reminds me of an International 14's rudder controls. Perhaps this is more about moving the whole rudder, rather than having more / larger flaps on either foil - giving lower drag in the water.

As a Kiwi living in England, I'm very interested in this boat. I'm also a huge F1 fan and find it funny when people ask, " What does F1 know about the AC". Can't answer that, probably not much but they do know air flow and these boats are half flying so don't be dismissive. Also water, although 50 times more viscose than air, I suspect but don't know for sure, probably can be modelled in an F1 simulation too. Until these boats are head to head we can't know how good they are and then there is the crew, the added sauce that will mix things even more. My heart is with NZ but I find all these boats and the different design philosophies fascinating. Bring on the racing.

Has anyone obtained an opinion from Dick Beaumont? Also, I recently watched RR2 review of the 400 which questioned the wide flat transom, suggesting it would ‘roll like a pig’ when sailing down wind. Isn’t this 50 just more of the same? Having said that this does seem to be a fantastic boat with amazing space. Rig and controls sound (and look) excellent. I know I would love it. Assuming my fears about downwind sailing are misplaced it would be perfect for my projected ocean passages. Thank you Mr Rassy. Great presentation Toby, as usual.

I think red bull has gone bigger in the F1 collaboration thing, albeit I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them are subbed out for accounting purposes so the F1 team can stay under the cost cap. Newey isn't the only one seconded to AC.

I think you're being too cynical. The top F1 teams like Ferrari and Mercedes have developed some of the most powerful modelling tools available - that's what Luna Rossa and Ineos are drawing on. Last series Mercedes were brought into the process too late and the British boat simply didn't perform to spec. We can be sure that they've been working to sort out the glitches with the modelling this time around. And F1 also brings deep expertise in materials, fabrication, reliability engineering and systems - all of which you have to get right on these sophisticated boats.
